Medical Uniform Fabrics

Healthcare garments are washed dozens of times a week. Durability, dimensional stability and colour fastness drive the fabric choice.

Polyester knit carries three things at once in medical uniforms: dimensional stability through hot industrial washing, the deep wash fastness of disperse dyes, and fast drying. Elastane variants add freedom of movement across long shifts.

Hygiene claims belong to the finish layer, not the fabric: antimicrobial treatment is optional and its durability is reported through wash-cycle testing. The five structures below run from scrub tops to structured gowns.

Recommended fabrics

Polyester Interlock

Interlock (double-knit)

170–260 g/m²

In this application
The scrub and uniform body: smooth double face, colour coding via sublimation, non-curling edge.
Composition
100% polyester (e.g. 75D/72f textured filament yarn); rPET common, elastane-free.

Polyester Single Jersey with Elastane

Single jersey + elastane

160–250 g/m²

In this application
The stretch top for long shifts: follows the body, recovers through washing.
Composition
~92–95% polyester / 5–8% elastane (spandex); commonly 95/5 and 92/8.

Polyester Piqué

Piqué

170–240 g/m²

In this application
Textured, breathing surface: healthcare polos and administrative wear.
Composition
100% polyester (typical); microfilament yarn for sublimation lustre.

Microfiber Polyester Knit

Microfiber polyester knit

85–180 g/m²

In this application
Light top with a soft hand: comfort in skin contact.
Composition
100% polyester microfiber — filament fineness below 1 denier (microdenier, ~0.5 dpf); far finer than standard PES (1.5–4 dpf).

Ponte di Roma (Punto di Roma) Double Knit

Ponte di Roma double knit

270–360 g/m²

In this application
Structured gowns and jackets: full-bodied drape in the 270–360 g/m² window.
Composition
Polyester-led; most qualities carry ~3–8% elastane. Market ponte is often rayon/poly-elastane; this file takes a polyester+elastane base.

Weight windows come from catalogue data; final specs are confirmed on a sample.

Engineering window

Weight window85–360 g/m² (2.5–10.6 oz/yd²)
Wash durabilityDimensional stability in industrial cycles; shrinkage controlled by heat-setting
Colour fastnessDisperse HT dyeing — lot consistency for colour-coded department uniforms
Hygiene finishAntimicrobial finish is optional; durability reported via wash testing

Frequently asked questions

Why polyester knit for medical uniforms?

Frequent hot industrial washing shrinks and fades cotton; heat-set polyester knit holds its dimensions, disperse dye locks colour inside the fibre, and the fabric dries fast — matching shift turnaround.

Is antimicrobial fabric permanent?

The antimicrobial effect is added as a finish and can decline with washing; the claim is therefore stated with a test report after a defined number of wash cycles. The durability target is agreed at order stage.

Which weight window for a scrub top?

The 170–260 g/m² interlock window is the common starting point for scrub bodies: it balances opacity, drape and sewability. Structured gowns and jackets step up to 270–360 g/m² double-knit interlock.
