Underwear and Loungewear Fabrics

Underwear fabric lives on the skin: it must feel soft, present a smooth face and hold its shape through washing.

Hand feel is set by filament fineness: microfilament polyester (low dpf) packs more, finer fibres into the same weight — the surface gets softer and coverage improves. Interlock rib gives a smooth double face on the skin side; mesh structures keep airflow open in sports underwear.

On the loungewear side, brushed two-thread fleece raises the inner face into a comfort layer. The six structures below span daily intimates to home comfort; each card carries its rationale and a technical data sheet link.

Recommended fabrics

Polyester Single Jersey

Single jersey

120–200 g/m²

In this application
The carrier of daily underwear: light, even face, wide weight window.
Composition
100% polyester (PES); combed/ring yarn by quality, recycled (rPET) version available.

Interlock (smooth double-knit)

Interlock (smooth double-knit)

180–300 g/m²

In this application
Smooth double face on the skin side; non-curling edge, clean seam ground.
Composition
100% polyester (common); elastane-free — stretch comes from the structure.

Microfiber Polyester Knit

Microfiber polyester knit

85–180 g/m²

In this application
Microfibre hand: peach-skin texture and high coverage from low dpf.
Composition
100% polyester microfiber — filament fineness below 1 denier (microdenier, ~0.5 dpf); far finer than standard PES (1.5–4 dpf).

Polyester Single Jersey with Elastane

Single jersey + elastane

160–250 g/m²

In this application
Body-following intimates and bodysuits: balanced stretch and recovery.
Composition
~92–95% polyester / 5–8% elastane (spandex); commonly 95/5 and 92/8.

Breathable Micro Mesh (lining)

Breathable micro mesh (lining)

80–130 g/m²

In this application
Sports underwear and linings: invisible lightness in the 80–130 g/m² window.
Composition
100% polyester or, for light stretch, ~90–95% PES / 5–10% elastane; mostly microfilament polyester.

Brushed (Fleece-Backed) Polyester French Terry

Brushed-back French terry

240–360 g/m²

In this application
Loungewear: brushed inner face, soft and warm home comfort.
Composition
100% polyester; the thick loop yarn on the reverse is brushed/napped. Cotton-PES brushed terry is also common.

Weight windows come from catalogue data; final specs are confirmed on a sample.

Frequently asked questions

What difference does microfibre make in underwear?

Roughly 1 denier per filament and below counts as microfibre. More, finer fibres in the same weight mean a softer surface and better coverage; micro polyester works in this window.

Does polyester breathe in underwear?

Breathability depends more on knit architecture than on the fibre: mesh and porous structures open airflow, and a wicking finish spreads sweat across the surface. The dry feel on the skin comes from those two layers.

Which fabric suits loungewear?

Brushed two-thread fleece (240–360 g/m²) carries loungewear with its balance of softness and warmth; for a lighter feel, the unbrushed two-thread window is the step down.
